Boomkop3 It's not like Kagi would be running these models themselves, it'd be provided through an API like any other. I'm not sure if PR is an issue here either, it's not like chats are public and I don't think anyone but pro-censorship activists would truly object to adding these models. Beyond simply the ideology of disliking corporate lobotimisation of LLMs there's plenty of legitimate reasons to use uncensored models.

The notion that Kagi might encounter reputational damage or adverse publicity is entirely unfounded. Have you ever heard of Venice.ai or nofiltergpt.com? They provide public access to the most popular uncensored AI models, and their relative obscurity belies your concerns as they have been operating beyond the purview of the pro censorship brigade for quite some time now, if they can do it, so can Kagi.

I'm asking as someone who has never used uncensored AI models... Do they really make a difference with common, everyday, "generic" queries? If someone is going to maximize use of uncensored models, wouldn't they just download and use offline/locally?

I don't disagree at all with @Paracelsus, they make a great argument, but are there downsides to using them with Kagi's Assistant product? I am someone who enjoys a "Perplexity-like" experience to gain access to a range of models, but choose Kagi for privacy reasons. I don't like the direction Perplexity is headed, and I don't want a ChatGPT subscription. With that said, it seems that the Kagi devs are really working hard on making their A.I. offerings align with the competition. Paired with the lightning fast search, I think we're in for a good time. Thoughts?

IMO, using more uncensored models brings us closer to how "ChatGPT and friends" were during their first and second generations. Current generation LLM's all tend to be extremely risk averse, regardless of your purpose or expertise.

I would say a few times a week I see a rejection. One completely blocked query across all Kagi's LLM's except DeepSeek, was a request to obfuscate the classic XSS exploit (I just needed something quick to test a WAF at work). That is a trivial request that any software engineer could make by hand in a few minutes - but blocked because it could possibly be bad?

On the subject of running these models locally - we aren't near to being able to run even smaller models like DeepSeek, consumers can barely run 70B non-compressed models using $4K of hardware (DeepSeek R1 is 671B).

KagiFeedbackDuder To add onto what @silvenga said about local models, I've played around with them before (RTX 4070 for reference, not an A100 but nothing to scoff at). The quality difference between them and models you get on Kagi is night and day; and that's without even taking into account Internet access and Kagi search integration. Speed is also a big factor, IME those small and lower-quality models run ₂-4x slower depending on the exact model in question.

ChatGPT o3, 4o, and 4.1 all refuse that request.

From community benchmarks, Claude and OpenAI tend to be the most extremely censored (defined by, either direct refusal or silent deviate from the user's requests). In my experience, UGI is pretty accurate.

silvenga I asked it "why won't you answer this question" and it explained with several points, and offered to elaborate and explore other information around the subject that it denied

We can't really know, so we can't really use that information for anything outside of it being a mathematically likely answer. It's not like we are going to get a summary of the very meeting with OpenAI lawyers (could even have been Microsoft lawyers) that recommend censoring due to XYZ liability case in some random country they operate in.

Like, try asking DeepSeek why it can't talk about the Tiananmen Square - it's not actually going to give you a legit answer (tested 05/09/2025):
