this is wildly subjective, but I think side-by-side arrows wouldn't be as bothersome. it's the spatial one triangle above the other that I'm tripping up on. it's just a familiar iconography almost.

Vlad I agree. I think it should remain as it currently is. I rarely use this feature, and it's usually just for downranking. It's annoying to raise certain high quality sites e.g. Wikis, because they'll show up above a specific result I'm looking for. Not looking for this to be such a prominent feature on search. I appreciate my simple, uncluttered Kagi search experience.

I think the way it's currently implemented works just fine. It's not cluttering the search experience in its current state.

I also think that making it more visible to the user is a mistake. Influencing your own search results should be a very intentional action because it affects every search in the future. By putting it front and center, it would definitely promote usage, but is that really a good thing? I'm speaking from my own experience, but I like the search results I get even though I've only used up 19/1000 ranked domains. If I go to a website and it turns out to be a site that is generating AI slop, I will intentionally go and block that domain, but that's rare. I honestly don't think the average user would realize just how much influence their upvote/downvote action would have on their search results.

Personalized results are a major feature that makes Kagi stand out. However, you can't forget that the succinct, high quality results that it gives you by default are also a driving factor behind using it.

Regardless of what is chosen, I think the current shield icon is not 'right'. Pinning, preferring, and lowering have little to do with protection. I'd say something like

I'm not sure what to do with the current "!". It mostly seems reserved for sites with lots of ads/trackers, maybe http-only sites? In that case, the ASCII version of "👁" could work.

As for interaction, I agree with Prostagma, definitely think layman users should be kept from 'destructive' actions (lowering and blocking) to protect the user against themselves. It might not matter much now, but the more popular Kagi gets, the higher the ratio of atechnical users.

A twist on this we came up with is to show this only when the user visits a link and then goes back in their browser. This would be a wonderful signal for us to show the UI controls as they would be relevant for this situation (user loved or hated what they saw and timing is right for them to rank). But there is a problem - most browsers treat going back by relaoding from cache and thus not giving us an opportunity to interact.

If you have some ideas how to overcome this we are all ears!

Vlad I actually have links from Kagi open in new tabs, which shouldn't have the cache reloading. I do still think there may be value in adding icons though on hover though

z64 Gotta say I was a bit confused reading this as well, thanks for clarifying. Is this not shown in onboarding? It's been a year and a half almost since I started using Kagi so I forget haha. If not there could be a mention of it there. I also really like jjrvi idea for symbols, tho I'd suggest keeping the shield and maybe adding the site rank status separately?

Example use case:
1) search for keyword ("nostr")
2) review results
3) find completely unrelated result from a credible website
4) there is no method to signal this is result is noise

There is no method for me to downrank a result, which should not be displayed and is entirely irrelevant to my search query. My only option is to downrank an entire website in github, which I do not want to do.

The pictured Kagi result ( github hostdb ) has nothing to do with the search query (nostr).

dps I don't have that setting enabled but I generally open results in new tabs (often several at once).

A manual vote does seem better than trying to extract meaning from the order/timing results were viewed, as well as being more privacy-compatible.

There's too many factors that votes conflate: result answers intent behind user's query, result is quality resource that matches query, result is approved of by user's preferences/politics/biases/beliefs/knowledge.

The suggestion title seems to be about website-level adjustments, but this isn't how people in this thread alone seem to be understanding it.

Lots of people on social media, etc, will downvote things that are high-quality but that they disagree with. I don't think I trust Kagi users to be better in this regard.

It is solely isolated to your results / account. It has no effect on anyone else's results.

This ticket is about the discoverability of this feature, as its one of our "flagship" features that users find a lot of value in - but sometimes people don't realize they can do it.

z64 ok, so we're solely talking about raising/blocking/etc sites? When OP said "upvote, or downvote a particular result", to me that's talking about a webpage suggested in response to a query, especially with talk of "training Kagi". The suggested designs seem to also support this result-level (not site-level) understanding.

But ok! Well, in that case, I'm personally happy with the current solution (and have over 1000 sites customised) so would request being able to opt out of these changes if they're implemented.
