The API model is unaffected by whatever happens on X's deployment of the model as they're only modifying the system prompt. Kagi uses its own system prompt (or you can provide your own). There are honestly not any other alternatives to Grok in terms of being uncensored (without jailbreaks), mainstream, and relatively SOTA (it's still censored, but not as much as the other models).

While I certainly don’t like Elon or his shenanigans, you can just not use it. Having a rather uncensored and very smart model is valuable.

I second this. If my efforts into degoogling are in turn supporting entities that have proven to be unreliable, malicious and egaging in overt and covert censorship practices that are politically motivated to divert discourse, then I would move on to something different. I say, if you want to use "Grok", go use it on X. If my payments are helping you in anyway whatsoever into supporting cancerous, anti academic big techs that i am hoping to avoid, then I would rather cancel my subscription and move on. At the very least, I should be made abundantly clear and able to that which is sensible: models I want to "delete" and not use are not shown in my accounts, and my payments don't go towards contributing more collboartion and projects in that direction

On topic: It's the same as everywhere. Where to stop it? It's not like other AI Model providers don't push their own agenda (or don't care if it gets pushed by others pushing their agenda on the internet). So if we remove xAI for political reasons. Why not also remove Google, Meta and maybe others that have been proven to not be politically neutral in the past?
And to make it more pointy: Not only those considered being far right did horrible things in past and might have views not compatible with good humanity. Those considered being far left did plenty of it. And lately even those considered being center are pushing more and more things (like abortions) that can easily be considered unethical and against humanity.

tbf, only one of these ceo's is actively doing fascist things and 'accidentally' made their model be a nazi for a bit (none of the other models have had this problem). but yeah...

I guess that is covered up nicely by what I've written. Political options are different. And I think many things other do or say are more fascist-like or for other reasons a more serious threat. So why cancel the one and not the others?

[deleted] The open nature of the internet means that it is possible for each one of us to stumble upon things which are unpleasant. It is expected. And the same is tru for LLM agents, who work with data they have ingested, which reflects what's on the internet. So in my perspective, asking to censor LLM agents is akin to asking to censor search results.

I agree with the OP here. There are plenty of choices that aren't shrouded in so much controversy that the loss of Grok on The Assistant wouldn't be a big deal.

I don't need to go into detail about all of Musk's problems. He's a garbage-person. We pay for Kagi and access to the Assistant and I don't like that my money, yes it's a small amount, goes to toward supporting such an individual. I know it's not just Musk behind Grok (normal people work there, too) but his face and name are all over it.

There's some what-about-ism going on in here. Microsoft, Google, DeepSeek. They're all problematic now or at various points in their history. And the individuals that run them should be held accountable, too. Both are possible and should happen. Musk's an easy target because X is now the nazi platform filled with bots, his cars are falling apart, and he's an heir to an ethically dubious South African emerald mine. Too many known problems. So why bother supporting the guy?

I know the natural reply to this is "stop paying for kagi, then". I like Kagi, the mission, the company. I see this is as misstep on the way to building something awesome. It's possible to correct. Capitalism doesn't mean we have to tolerate assholes in the marketplace. We're allowed to show them the door and tell them "you're being an asshole."

joshsmoshgosh to be fair, if an individual user doesn't use Grok, I imagine Kagi doesn't have to pay for API access in that case either. So, you can "vote with your wallet" in that regard.

Unless I'm wrong, then never mind. 🫣

I do think ultimately what might be a great addition is the ability to allow/block individual LLMs as Kagi users can already do with search results.

I'd be content not using it and feel no need to demand that it be removed entirely. It is quite awkward, though, to find it in the "recommended" list. That seems like a positive endorsement rather than "we have it and you can avoid using it if you prefer".

Please do not incorporate technology from fascists, especially not overt ones. There is no sense in giving them money and/or platforming them, long-term we will all suffer the consequences.

madhatter Definitely don't disagree with you there. I personally choose not to use Grok for all of the very valid reasons given in this thread. If I had the ability to remove it from my list I absolutely would along with some others just for the sake of having a smaller, less confusing list of models for myself.

I guess at the end of the day, there are no ethical billionaires and whether one chooses to patronize their services or not is an individual choice. All choices we make as consumers come with ethical considerations

And all the complains about Musk being fascist sounds to me like all the political accusations we have here in Germany, where everyone is called Nazi who stands for even slight conservative values. Yet all those people don't realize that they are using fascistic methods to fight those the call the political right (it's not like they are going for the extremists - being normal is enough for those).
I'd rather not see Kagi going that route.

Shouldn't you guys also ask Apple and Google to block x.com and other websites you don't like from being accessible through their browsers while we're at it? Do you think they would listen to such a request? If not, then why should Kagi?
