When using maps it can be useful to check how far apart two points on the map are. This is separate from travel time, because it can be useful to check (for example) exactly how far apart two cities are geographically.
Google Maps does distance measure via right click -> Measure Distance which pops up a rule that shows a great circle route. Letting the user select points would seem to be the most flexible.
