The new Safari extension 2.0 does not work

Hello, since the new Safari extension has been released, using Kagi on my iPad has been nearly impossible.

I’ve configured it as required:

But extension doesn’t seem to be present:

And when I search something, instead of Kagi, the default engine is being used (in my case DuckDuckGo)

I expect the search to be redirected to Kagi

andreagrandi, thanks for the feedback and screenshots. It looks like your extension settings in Safari are correct. You've allowed the extension in regular and private browsing, and if I'm translating Italian correctly, you've allowed the extension to run on all domains. Looks good there 👍🏻.

The new extension requires that you select the same search engines in the Safari Settings as well as in the Kagi app. If you open the Kagi app on your iPad, is DuckDuckGo selected in the search engine dropdown (step 4, in the screenshot here)?

I see the same issue on my iPhone, even more frustrating, it seems to be intermittent. It works... sometimes. Some combination of allowing and disallowing the extension and killing safari seems to bring it back for awhile, but then it reverts to DuckDuckGo again.

This is with the new cross platform extension.

This is super frustrating. The update forces a new configuration to be set up, so I’ve had to set it up again on multiple devices. It also works a lot less reliably than the last extension.

Safari search suggestions are directed to the underlying search engine, so setting DuckDuckGo is preferable to having all search queries go to Google as searches are typed.

@nanoscrew I can confirm that this issue occurs when DuckDuckGo is set both as the Safari search engine and set within the Kagi extension app. The issue also occurred when I changed it to Ecosia in Safari and the Kagi app.

I’ve got the same issue now too. For me force quitting safari and reopening it seems to do the trick almost every time, and the search magically switches from DuckDuckGo to Kagi in the same page load too, but it’s incredibly frustrating to not reliably end up on Kagi every time and having to do this dance.

I also tried uninstalling the updated version of the old app and installing the new app release, which made no difference. 😞

2.0.0 is not working for me either. I reinstalled and went through the setup instructions again and still no go.

I can confirm that 2.0 is broken.

On macOS it uses duckduckgo if searched via address bar. But if you enter any search query inside duckduckgo website, only then uses kagi, which is useless.

On iOS it always uses duckduckgo instead of kagi (even when searching inside duckduckgo).

Both macOS and iOS are latest public betas

I’m having the same issue following the release of 2.0. The extension and Safari are set to use the same engine (ddg), and searches almost never use Kagi in Safari. If I tap the extension under the aA button, it will switch from a ddg results page to Kagi. If I run a new search, it goes to ddg. OS version is 17.2.1.

I’ve deleted, reinstalled, and reconfigured the Kagi extension. It’s enabled for both private browsing and non-private browsing. The extension has access to all pages. I’ve never had trouble with it prior to the 2.0 update.

I’m hoping for a quick fix because I need Kagi to work! I love it so much!

I installed the new Kagi on my Mac mini and it worked fine. But on my iPad it never uses Kagi. I’ve tried using both Ecosia and Yahoo as my “search engine I’ll never use” and it just doesn’t redirect to Kagi. I also restarted my iPad which didn’t help.

I know you can use TestFlight to make apps available to a limited user set, not sure if you could do this for extensions, to avoid this kind of situation.

FWIW I just installed the new extension on both my iPad and iPhone using Yahoo as the search engine and both are working wonderfully. The redirects are happening much faster than with the previous extension which was a big annoyance for me in the past.

Facing the exact same problem on iOS. Using DuckDuckGo as the Safari default + selected that in Kagi app. I have enabled the extension from Safari settings and allowed access to all web pages. Tried both the new app and the old Kagi app's 2.0.0 version, and the issue where a search ends up in DuckDuckGo without a Kagi redirect seems to happen randomly. Most often when opening Safari after a while and doing a search.

This is broken for me as well. Randomly, I’m stuck on DDG and not Kagi. Latest iOS on iPad and iPhone.

Same problem, I chose Ecosia as the “never used” engine and it doesn’t really work. Echoing what some others have said, it works occasionally when you fiddle around with killing the browser but goes right back to Exosia not long after.

Edit: updated to 2.0.1 and it started working again, time will tell if it breaks again

What’s the difference between the two extensions in the App Store? I see that one works on iOS only and the other works on MacOS and iOS. Other than that, is there a functional difference?

This is happening for me too. The extension is set up correctly. It will work for a while and then stop working. Disabling and re-enabling the extension causes it to start working again for a while, but it will eventually stop
