Brave extension doesn’t alter search engine

I installed the Kagi Search extension in Brave and pinned it to the address bar. I click on the extension icon and it indicates it’s found my session. I search for something from the address bar but it uses Brave Search instead of Kagi.

The extension uses Kagi as the search engine in Brave instead of what’s specified in Brave Settings > Search engine.

Is this not an issue within Brave?

@decayingposture I just downloaded Brave and installed it fresh on macOS Tahoe, installed the Kagi extension and it all worked for me.

Have you tried removing the extension and reinstalling?

What system are you seeing this on?

Dustin yes I did. Zorin OS 18 (Ubuntu derivative).

Brave on Nixos, having the same issue actually.
Installed the extension but doesn't modify or even add itself to the list of search engines

this is the manual workaround btw. But yeah, this feels like a bug

I installed the Flatpak on Fedora Silverblue and see the same issue. Notably, this does not affect Chrome on the same system so I guess this is something to report to Brave.

Unfortunately chromium on linux specifically does not allow extensions to set a default search engine.
It's been this way for a while.

So not much we can do here unfortunately.

pixel Probably just worth updating the doc to say that. I noticed it as well, but I just manually set the search engine and use the extension to allow Kagi search in private windows as well, just assumed the doc was out of date.

pixel Thanks for finding that. Interesting that not all chromium APIs exist/work on all platforms.

pixel Interestingly, I installed a new distro and put the Chrome Flatpak on it. When it installed the Kagi extension automatically initially, it didn't work. However, I reinstalled it and then it did. I ended up having two entries, the one I made manually and the one it made.

I was a bit surprised
