Proofreading not understanding Markdown correctly

I write in Markdown. I've been using the proofreading feature, and it generally understands Markdown characters, but in this case, it doesn't understand that the asterisks are Markdown.

As you can see in the screenshot, it didn't flag the double asterisks at the beginning of the paragraph.

Just curious: Which of the many different markup formats should the Proofreading feature officially support? In my opinion, the right thing to do would be to just accept plain text. Formatting is not a part of a language processor.

tux0r asterisks are also used for emphasis in plaintext. I think proofreading just shouldn't touch any special characters that are not punctuation symbols.

fxgn How would the proofreader know that the asterisks are actually intentional? In normal cases, outside markup writing, they're usually typos.
