You are stripping the Referrer from being available on the landing page when a user clicks through from Kagi. I expect this is a misguided attempt to preserve privacy: it does this, in particular masking the search terms used on the search, it means site owners don't recognise the visitor as arriving from organic search and won't have any idea of the market size of Kagi, hence no incentive to make sure they index well there.

You can mask the query parameters while still showing your origin, in ways similar to how google does this. This should balance privacy with accurate attribution of source.

Happy to test if you want to do this.

  1. Type search term into Kagi and search
  2. Click through on a result
  3. view document.referrer and see it is an empty string

Ha! I just wrote this one: https://kagifeedback.org/d/4637-new-assistant-leaks-referral

IMO, I don't think Kagi should promote the same SEO behavior that Google has promoted - it's what has caused a lot of bad results being prioritized by Google (all those SEO farms). Most of the new age sites e.g. Fediverse, do block referral headers by default.

There's no reason to provide extra information to third-parties about their users - if those users didn't care about this data, then the site could just ask them where they came from, and the users should be happy to provide it (and if that's not feasible, that might suggest it's data that shouldn't be passed automatically).

Indeed, this is intentional - as a policy we do not want to enable any kind of 3rd party tracking. Especially since this is already established behavior from us, a sudden change to start exposing a means for 3rd parties to identify Kagi users would not be welcome.

The issue from silvenga is a bug, and will be hotfixed shortly.

As an alternative we have tossed around ideas for webmaster tools on Kagi, that could give similar value but in ways that better align with Kagi's business/privacy model. Please see https://kagifeedback.org/d/3760-ultimate-plan-features-brainstorming for some recent-ish discussion (may be others laying around, this is just one I happened to remember)
