Kagi doesn't work when on some VPN's (403 forbidden error)

For me, Kagi Translate, Assistant, and Summarise don't work with an active Proton VPN.

Kagi Summarize returns an error when Proton VPN is active, even with NetShield turned off. As soon as I disable the VPN, Summarize works. I use the Summarize app with Orion.
The same happens with the Kagi Translate app; it gets stuck at 89% and only reaches 100% after turning off

Kagi isn't blocking any VPNs, but the managed WAF services seem to be blocking some IPs, that are probably being used for attacks. When you use VPNs you share your IP with others, and it's not possible to tell the difference between you and attackers.

One solution that often works is to switch to a different server.

I am trying to search something and then this error popped up.
Doesn't matter if it is Privacy Pass or Regular.
"Your client does not have permission to get URL /search from this server."
I was logged in.
Tried to resolve the issue by clearing app data, and relogin didn't solve it.
Can't even login back.
Same error upon clicking login button.

Using Pixel 10, running GrapheneOS.

Using Mullvad VPN.

As far as i understand, "Your client does not have permission to get URL /search from this server." - means i am unable to use Kagi over VPN as i was and am connected to a VPN.

I am a paid user.
For free user, changing VPN server can help spamming and resetting the 100 free search counter.

But i am a paid user, professional.

I have been using Mullvad for 6 years and Kagi professional since May.

Proper result.

Changing the VPN server fixed the issue.
I am able to login and search properly.
The issue i am facing in on Mullvad server name/no - ch-zrh-wh-201 (Switzerland, Zurich)

For testing, i switched back to this same server and again the same issue.
But changing that server fixes it.

Thank you for the update! I am happy to hear the solution was relatively simple.
Dealing with VPNs continues to be a challenge, but hopefully we'll get there one day.

I often get this issue; I installed "Mullvad Browser Extension" on desktop Firefox, and just manually chose a server specifically for Kagi. This is a slightly janky solution, but does work.

Ideally, the fact that you're logged in and the like should mean that Kagi just lets you use the service (they have privacy pass via tor, which means that something that respects privacy and also allows anonymization, etc can work). Not entirely sure how to go about doing it, but it'd be a welcome fix should they figure something out.

Whenever I browse YouTube on my iPhone with Mullvad (their Albania servers mean no ads on YouTube), I can’t use Kagi summarize. It just spins for ever without ever summarizing. As soon as I switch off the VPN, it’s fine. Please consider not blocking Mullvad for summarize.

FYI: For myself, Kagi Summarize on iOS 26.3.1(a) with Mullvad VPN (2026.1) is working normally, on YouTube videos and other websites.

Pleonasm for me too! Maybe I didn’t wait long enough or there was a temporary problem. Anyway, all good now!

On my phone I use ProtonVPN, which is always enabled. But with VPN enabled, the assistent fails, as shown in the screenshot
It does not matter whether I use it in the browser or the kagi app; the result is the same. It alsook does not matter whether I have netshield enabled (protonvpn's tracking protection).

I now have to use split tunneling to exclude the kagi app from the VPN connection, but that defeats the purpose of using a VPN.

Don't know whether it is a ProtonVPN or a Kagi issues; will report this issue there as well.

Everything should just work, either with or without VPN.
