The "g" Kagi logo is confusing. This is a serious branding problem.

Kagi's favicon is small letter g. I 2007-201x Google used to have same letter as a favicon. Every time I see Kagi's favicon, my brain thinks I'm using google. I cannot find Kagi tabs because of this.

To mee all of these tabs seem to be google related (sorry): {three tabs, two of which are Kagi, one is Google}

Would like to have an option to select a different favicon:

predefined different letters
different color
custom favicon
bonus point: different Kagi properties should have a slightly different icon (color?)

I would select a different icon for Kagi. Perhaps small or capital K can be used; different colors for search/maps/translate, etc?

Would probably mess with branding consistency (ie someone looking over and seeing you are using Kagi but the logo is different). Different colors are also already used for assistant and I imagine will be rolled to others eventually.

Vouch for a minor rebrand. Not a fan of the g & while it’s a good logo, just doesn’t match the brand. I’m gonna work on some ideas & post here later!

I'll add—I like the "g". As a web dev, I find the "g" reads really well on small icons, many companies just take their logo and make it smaller. The result usually looks pretty bad. The yellow background works pretty well.

So when I see the “g” fav icon I almost do a double take to make sure I’m not “googling” something. I know it’s the third letter in Kagi but monograms and one or two letter fav icons are usually the first letter(s). Probably not a huge deal to most and although I don’t know the reason it does leave me feeling a little creeped out. I already feel like there is no escaping from big googles line of sight for numerous reasons. But if Kagi is really all along… no, I’m not going to say it!!!

Maybe there’s a better place for this discussion. I am not aware of it if it exists!

There are multiple ways the Kagi favicon differentiates itself from the big G.

For one it is in minuscule g cf. the majuscule G. That should already be decisive enough.

Then there's colour - the big G uses a variety of primary colours. Meanwhile, Kagi's favicon seems to use black text on orange; or white text on purple.

I think the pathological association of any form of the letter g—regardless of its case, in any colour or form—to Google is not really contingent on Kagi.

Anyone else think the Kagi “g” looks a lot like the Goodreads logo? I also still don’t really understand the explanation Kagi gives for its logo. Doesn’t really make sense to me.

Goodreads' favicon looks completely different, so irrelevant to the discussion.

I've had some double-takes on the 'g' logo, but I've gotten used to it and it's grown on me. I like the font, the color, and as others have said it invokes a magnifying glass for search. At this point, it would be confusing if Kagi suddenly changed to a 'k' logo or a doggo mascot logo.

My main issue with the 'g' is that English speakers read left to right and Kagi starts with a 'K'. There is no dictionary in the world where you could look up a word that starts with the letter 'K' and find it in the 'g' section. It goes against norms, so it can be unintuitive and it can create friction.

But my vote goes towards keeping it. It's already part of the brand and I can't imagine a new Kagi logo without it!

I'll give my two cents on the subject, I’m a 42 Student, and whenever someone searches up something on my laptop, they always go to something along the lines "what's this search engine?" I never really saw anyone confuse it with any existing search engine.
To be fair, search engines are one of our main tools and we do heavy use of them, so 42 Students may be more prone to notice changes in the search engines.

Lastly, I personally think this discussion is somewhat over anyway, it feels too late for Kagi to change it's logo in any way, the branding is definitely set and established at least for a while.
Whether it's in videos, blogs, and even the merch, the current branding is used and changing it will lose a lot of precious brand recognition.

After updating all my apps, it looks like it doesn't feel cohesive anymore (wasn't assistant a g with a purple background at the start?) that might be something to work on though as individually these are great logo's but they don't have a cohesive look together yet:

Turns out it is, on my desktop, I haven’t updated any icons, and they look pretty cohesive (ignore news):

Somewhat sad that we are losing this very pleasant cohesion, maybe a compromise could be made between unique logos and cohesiveness.

Desoroxxx yeah, they used to all be colored versions of the same logo, but that was too confusing when having multiple tabs with different services open

Desoroxxx no, it was just confusing to remember which is which. I personally clicked on the wrong tab many times because they all had the same logo with a different color. You have to constantly memorize "yellow=search, green=translate, purple=assistant" to navigate that
