Safari extension must be reset constantly to work consistently

I set up my extension as requested on the app, and it works. However, any extended absence forces the url redirector to stop working. I can rectify this by turning the extension off then on in the manage extensions menu. But it’s annoying.

I expected the extension to just keep working

theCaptain I am wondering did you set up the search engine in the extension settings?

Vlad yes. I have it set to Ecosia since I never ever visit that site.

The Safari extension works intermittently for me. Maybe 1 out of 5 times it will fail and send the query to the default search engine, and in private mode sometimes it does redirect to Kagi but fails to authenticate (sends me to login page). iOS 17.4.1. Haven’t been able to identify any kind of pattern.

lakeman I’ve had a similar experience. Maybe 1 in 10 times it fails for me on iOS and then starts working again when I try the search again.

This is beyond our control - it is either a bug in Safari or something else. Paid extensions like xSearch have the same problem. We recommend using Orion browser with Kagi built in for a smooth Kagi experience. Also you can use the Apple feedback tool to ask Apple to add Kagi as a search engine in Safari which would eliminate the need for an extension.

1) Thanks for the tip on Apple. Submitting feedback now.
2) I may have figured out the issue for me at least. I had downloaded the extension a LONG time ago, and there seems to be an updated extension? I downloaded that and it works MUCH better. Sorry for the confusion. I didn't get any notice that my app was depreciated or my phone didn't update it properly, so I just didn't realize.

I was going to say... Mac OS / iOS user here. I joined 2 months ago. The extension has worked flawlessly for me - glad you found out the new extension worked!

Steps I took: I installed the extension - activated it in Safari Extensions. Then I went to duckduckgo.com - and gave the extension full access ONLY to DuckDuckGo.com. I set my search engine to duckduckgo in safari. Bam, good to go. Been doing this for 2 months with 0 problems now.

This has been working perfectly on my iPad, Mac, and iPhone.

The new app on iOS is kinda just informative - has a video of what you need to do (above steps visually).

Also submitting Apple feedback for Kagi 😃.

Kagi works find as default on my mac and iphone. Not on my ipad. On ipad when I come back to a search after say 10 minutes or so and type in the box I get the previous search over. Refreshing doesn't help. This doesn't happen on iphone, all 3 machines on latest OS versions.

What also often happens on the ipad (and not iphone) is my former default browser, DuckDuckGo appears then disappears. I don't know this is relevant. All I know is if I come back to my ipad after a period of time Kagi often won't do new searches in existing boxes.

I expected to just type and search like on iphone and mac.

Correct I'm using Safari. I've submitted a feature request for kagi on the link you had above. Sounds like the fix for now is Orion. Thanks.

Must be a bug, I can't re-create this on my iPad Air 🙁 Maybe uninstall-reinstall the Kagi Extension for Safari? I am able to type in URL bar and search just like on iPhone / Mac. Hmm - I'll keep an eye out for this.

Yes, correct it does eventually work. I don't know if it is because of tabs in icloud or what but you come back and it can't "forget" the old search; takes 2 or 3 times and then works fine. FYI I tried switching default search in Safari and I couple other settings. So maybe it is the iclouds tab and some caching that doesn't reset?
