Kagi should take their video search experience into the NEXT LEVEL by integrating DeArrow and SponsorBlock.

Here are my suggestions:

  • Add a dropdown option to enable DeArrow and SponsorBlock.
  • Replace those shitty clickbait titles and thumbnails with stupid faces by using the crowdsourced alternatives from DeArrow. This will save users time by cutting out the sensationalism and make titles more accurate.
  • Show the length and number of sponsor segments under each video by using SponsorBlock. In the same way we can view the number of ads/trackers in the web results, we should be able to see the number of ads (and the lengths) in video results. Maybe even add an color-coded timeline showing where all the sponsor bits are.

A user would use these proposed feature by searching for something in the video category and enable the DeArrow and SponsorBlock options to make more informed decisions about what to watch.

    I just want to add that I see significant value in DeArrow integration and less so in SponsorBlock when it regards to a search engine, so if only one were to be added I would prefer it to be DeArrow.

    @Vlad Will this eventually be added/considered or is this idea abandoned (as that's "Under Review" for almost a a year)?

      I think that it would be really good if Kagi had an integration with Dearrow so it can leverage it's massive database of curated titles and thumbnails for videos to reduce clickbaits.

      Because it's an open source project, it would be nice if kagi could financially compensate it's usage of Dearrow to some degree then tbf

      This should be a setting btw, let users choose what kind of changes they want to happen, similar to the dearrow extension settings

        I think this is all backwards. Shouldn't Kagi surface high quality video results, instead of trying to mask low quality results by changing the thumbnail? If a video creator has a clickbait thumbnail, I know to not click that video. So the thumbnails serve a purpose.

            Some kind of analysis of the transcript is probably the way, maybe coupled with AI analysis of some snapshots from each video. But to do this, YouTube would need to have such an index, or you'd have to make one. Or maybe bypass YouTube's search API completely and source YouTube videos from links in a general web search.

            If somebody opens YouTube for entertainment purposes, to find something to watch, then I understand why you'd want to sanitize thumbnails. But if I'm searching for information, I'd like the original thumbnails to remain, so that I can know to avoid videos with clickbait thumbnails, since the video itself will be low quality.

                  carl I tend to agree. “Manipulate the presentation of YouTube search results based on a 3rd party and/or crowd sourced database” seems… sketchy.

                  I personally don’t use De-arrow because there’s a loss of context. The idea is noble but I’m not comfortable just wholesale outsourcing the subjective practice of “thumbnailing”.

                  I think that the addition of contextual data rather than a replacement is a better overall strategy for a lot of reasons.

                    Kagi already has the option to replace thumbnails with a random screenshot from the video.
                    My suggestion is to add the ability to show user submitted thumbnails, and titles from DeArrow if available.
                    Since I have already paid for DeArrow, I think it would be nice to be able to use that in search as well.

                    Context may be lost if the thumbnail only shows a random image from the video, and the title is just clickbait which doesn't tell us much.
                    For example a video with a title "DON'T DO THIS" and an over dramatic thumbnail with a chess board.
                    With a random screenshot from the video, you may just see a frame of the person talking, and lose the context that the video is about chess.
                    If the title and thumbnail is user submitted, you are less likely to lose context. The title may instead be "Why you should not do X in chess".

                    Chess may be a bad example here, but hopefully you get the point.

                    When users searches through videos, they could avoid clickbait, while still being able to have some context as to what the video actually is about.

                    Payment for DeArrow can either come from Kagi directly through whichever plan this feature would be available for, or the user could enter their UserID in the settings.

                      as mentioned in the other thread: dearrow is complicated to implement because of it's non commercial license.

                      The only thing I could happening is Kagi donating to dearrow to make the dearrow EXTENSION also function on kagi video search results.
