Kagi no longer works on iPad (iOS 12.5.7)

I assume it’s using a JavaScript library that employs a modern API that Safari doesn’t have, but the result is the whole UI is broken and I can’t use Kagi on my tablet. Unfortunately Apple have decided that this device gets no more updates.

Being able to see results.

chrisdone I am not able to reproduce this. Does it work in any other browser on iPad for you?

Vlad I installed Firefox Focus and the result is the same. Of course on this version of iOS all browsers are just wrappers around Safari’s engine, but this seems to rule out browser specific quirks. Not sure whether you’re aware that because I can no longer upgrade iOS, I can’t get a newer version of Safari’s engine.

There seems to be a non-backwards-compatible framework or API that is really popular these days because while I can still browse e.g. YouTube, a lot of websites increasingly fail to render. Even GitHub.

The last update, 12.5.7,[2] was released on January 23, 2023.

It’s apparently just a year old! I’d get a new iPad but life is expensive these days.

chrisdone FYI iOS 12 hasn't had a "feature update" since nearly 4 years. After that it was only security updates, which means nothing new was added/improved only bugs were fixed. So webkit/safari likely didn't get anything new since 4 years on your iPad.

Vlad , the html site renders properly as widescreen, but once I do a search, it’s clipped. Or, Is there supposed to be all that empty space on the right?

chrisdone we always had a no-js mode. Kagi practically looks and works identically when js is turned off. this is to say we do not use any js frameworks or any advanced js for that matter, so it is very weird that the site does not load on your ipad. If you can debug anything further that would be very helpful

I’m not able to debug it, requires a whole separate Mac to talk to it. Times have changed when 1.34MB of JavaScript and websockets are described as “minimal” and “not advanced”! Boggles the mind. But probably explains why the web is increasingly unusable.

I’m just happy there’s an HTML only version, that’ll do me! Thanks for the tip!
