The new Safari extension 2.0 does not work

This is happening for me too. The extension is set up correctly. It will work for a while and then stop working. Disabling and re-enabling the extension causes it to start working again for a while, but it will eventually stop

Same issue. Was excited about the 2.0 extension. I had been using xSearch since it was much faster (and required less permissions) than the 1.x extension. Sadly, after a couple searches, it complete stops working… Running the 2.0.1 update too.

It's happening on MacOS desktop as well for me.

After it stopped working, I opened the Kagi Search extension app and it's a blank window

We have 2.0.2 out now, we hope to have addressed most issues. Please update and confirm.

We apologize for the inconveinece. Apple does not make this easy. The extension will be soon open source at https://github.com/kagisearch/browser_extensions

We also recommend checking out Orion browser with Kagi integration as an alternative.

Vlad I just noticed that I was using the “wrong” extension (but it looks the same as the new one, so not really my fault :/ ) I see 2.0.2 available for the extension I uninstalled.

Please make the old and the new one distinguishable in App Store, to avoid this kind of confusion.

I will give the “new” one a try and let you know.

I’ve just updated to 2.0.2 and am still having issues on iOS 17 with Safari. I’ve set it up correctly and both the extension and Safari are set to Ecosia. Searches are not redirected as expected. If I tap on the site settings (Aa) and tap the extension icon, it will then load the search term in Kagi as expected. This does not persist afterwards.

Same happens here. I have updated to the latest 2.0.2 version and it works around 30% of the time. I have set both the browser settings and the app settings to DDG

Hey all

I've just did a clean install of 2.0.2 on iOS and so far I can confirm extension works properly.

Most important step is making sure you've given exxtension the permission to always access the website of your default search engine in Safari. If that is Google, the extension permissions should look like this.

If you have this set up and you run 2.0.2 and still have problems we ask you to upload a video reproducing the problem as well as state your phone and OS version.

I’ve installed 2.0.2, and it’s still broken. Searches go to ddg. If I tap the aA button and select the Kagi extension, it will switch to Kagi results. But, if I do a fresh search in a new tab, it goes to ddg. I’ve checked and double checked that the extension is set up correctly. I must say, it’s quite frustrating after having no trouble with the previous version.

nompan I understand it is frustrating, but let's try to move us forward.

Please share your phone, ios version as well as queries or video to reproduce the problem. On my phone it seems to work fine.

Note, this is only testing it anectdotally as I am using Orion browser day-to-day which has Kagi built it.

Also a reminder, that a core issue of the problem is Safari being only browser where you can not chose your search engine. Submitting product feedback to Apple and asking to allow users to select any search engine is something we should all do.

Happy to help, of course. My phone is iPhone 15 Pro. OS is 17.2.1. I’m running Kagi 2.0.2.

Queries can be anything, and I type them into the address bar. I’ve attached a screenshot of my Kagi extension settings. The Kagi app is set to ddg. I’ve tried giving the extension access to just ddg as well as all sites. I’ve also tried Bing and Ecosia (and set the Kagi app accordingly).

Let me know if there’s anything else I can provide to help. I’ll try to make a video when I get a chance.

One thing I discovered is that when Safari is always in private mode, I have to close the browser completely as one way to "re-enable" the extension (other than going through options to toggle the setting).

If I leave the Safari idle, the extension no longer has an effect and reverts to the configured engine (ddg in my case)

@Vlad I have gone ahead and reset the Kagi extension and set permissions to 'ask' again. I ran a search, enabled the extension for Ecosia only and will test.

Could perhaps one of the issues be coming from users granting the extension permissions for all websites and not just their chosen search engine?

Dustin All websites should be fine (the extension does not care), but it reality in only requires permissions for the website of the default selected search engine so that it can redirect to Kagi.

Same issue on:

Search engines tried: Bing, Ecosia, DuckDuckGo
Problem: works for a little while and then stops working with no apparent clear reason
Solutions found so far: disabling permissions and enabling them again for the extension seems to make the forward to Kagi work again for a while, but not permanently.
Trying now: only enabled the permissions on the specific search engine to n stead of “all sites”

After about 15 searches which worked successfully, I can report that the issue persists on iOS 17.

I reset everything as my above post
With Ecosia set as the default and Kagi set to match with permission for Ecosia correctly set, searches work fine
I went back to the Home Screen, locked the phone and put it down for a few minutes
Next search on a blank Safari with no tabs open results in all searches going to Ecosia
Tapped on the site settings, tapped on the Kagi extension and verified it is reporting as set up correctly
Closed all tabs, closed Safari, put the phone down
Tested private browsing searches: works
Tested regular searches: works
