Currently, it is not at all obvious that Kagi prorates in either direction, it would have been a much easier decision for me to try Ultimate had I known about downgrade prorating, and it would be a much easier sell to my friends if they can just use Starter and prorate to Professional.
Some sort of marketing copy regarding this very neat thing Kagi provides on the Pricing page would be really great!
Starter could include something like "Ran out of searches for the month? You can upgrade anytime and we'll prorate!"
Ultimate could include something like "Not satisfied with our Ultimate addons? Downgrade anytime and we'll prorate the difference!"
