Searching for "academia" images shows gym images

I expect to see pictures of universities or old people

Same as Google:

"academia" means "gym" in Portuguese. If you search for "academia lang:en" then you get better images (but it's still a very broad search):

Google shows different results but it's worse than Kagi:

If you search for "academia edu" then you give better hints about what you really want and the results seem to match what you expect (pictures of universities and old people or students):

Kagi and also Google should take the language the search engine has been set as into account so it can provide more accurate images.

(I have no idea how hard this would be to implement).

I am based in the UK and these are the results I receive when searching “academia”.

I would assume you haven’t selected a region in Google, or we just have different results.
