Ask "how did on Kawara make his today paintings"
Expected behavior:
any variation of: On Kawara painted his paintings by hand always showing white date in formal lettering, in language of the country he was visiting, on canvas painted in one of a limited set of colours which he "mixed by hand". 'These paintings took several hours to make and if not complete in 24 hours would be scrapped. A traditional Japanese approach to painting multiple layers was used. On first glance they all look similar but on closer inspection there are many variations of tone and energy to discover.
instead it tells me he made them "by simply writing the date of when he created the painting on a white canvas using black paint or ink. The date was written in a simple, matter-of-fact style."
Which, as summaries go, is almost the opposite of what he actually did.
You might say this is a very niche question. But wouldn't that make it easier to answer correctly? Also how would I know if a question is niche or not? The AI didn't alert me to a greater risk of error.
There is no indication that I need to check the results, just the impression that the answer presented is the final product.
This is a fail both as a search and a summary.
Unlike artists who produce work in genres where many others work, On Kawara's work is distinct, unique. There is also a lot of it!
If you do a Kagi image search you will see just how incorrect the AI answer is by looking at the paintings returned:
