I see, I wasn't aware that DDG is also using it the same way. I honestly don't think it's a big of an issue, but wanted to see if it was a normal behavior.
I think if \
is a desired feature, it might be good to indicate to the user in the drop down list what they are doing. For example, similarly to how !g hello world
shows "search google for "hello world", ! hello world
and \ hello world
should show "query hello world" or something similar.
it's also inconsistent that !
can be used at the beginning of the input and at the end, while \
can only be used at the beginning.
