What does your feature entail?
In the Kagi News iOS app, I would like a new option within the Settings menu to swap the left-to-right swipe that navigates between articles with a single left swipe anywhere on the viewport to return to the article list.
How will it affect existing workflows or user experience?
This feature is intended for an alternative way of browsing the article list for users that prefer to select specific articles to read rather than reading all articles sequentially.
Having a gesture that spans the entire viewport makes it significantly more comfortable to use.
What are the exact ways you see a user using your proposed feature?
I personally prefer to find an article I'm interested in, tap it to read, then swipe to return to the article list, visually scan the article list to find another article I'm interested in reading, then tap that one to begin reading.
Example of how other app(s) implement this feature
The Octal iOS Hacker News reader app has an implementation of this exact gesture to navigate. Instead of swiping between articles left and right, the drag area is across the entire viewport.
