Have anilist.co pinned in the personalization settings
Search for something present on anilist, e.g. puella magi madoka magica
anilist.co is nowhere to be found in the results
Make exactly the same query, but with anilist appended at the end
It's now present as the first result, as expected

Google and other search engines I've tested behave exactly that way too.

we're dependant on the upstream search providers, if they don't show anilist.co in the results they return, we can't put it at the top.

If you want anilist specifically, you can add @anilist in your search query and it'll only return results from anilist

Yes, as @Thibaultmol said if upstream providers don't give us anilist, we can't give you anilist :)
To add onto Thibault's suggestion, you can create a custom Snap mapped to anilist with a shorter name, if you don't feel like typing it out all the time.
