Kagi Search shows American Football when you search Football

When I search for "football" with the country filter/lens set to "International," the entire first page is dominated by NFL (American football) content like nfl.com, ESPN's NFL coverage, and NFL schedules. This completely ignores what "football" means internationally, where it universally refers to soccer, not American football. The International lens should understand regional terminology: NFL content makes sense when the region is set to "United States," but when I explicitly choose "International," the results should reflect global usage and show Premier League, Champions League, FIFA, and international soccer leagues instead. Right now it seems like the search defaults to US interpretations regardless of which lens I've selected, and the International setting needs to actually respect international conventions and language usage rather than applying a US-centric understanding globally.

This is what I see with the region set to the UK. The international setting always defaults to the US for everything: brands, Amazon, etc.

kirkmc interesting, defaulting to US Amazon or brands is fine because they're different in every country. For example, it's amazon.com in the US, amazon.de in Germany, amazon.in in India, and so on. However, football is American football just in the US lol.

We're planning some changes to improve search quality in the International region, which should go live soon.

The main idea is adding a new search filter (likely a location button) that tells us to incorporate location into the search results. When enabled, results will be localised based on the user's locatio, for example, a user in the UK searching for "football" would see Premier League results first, rather than NFL.

I'd welcome an open discussion on this, if anyone has thoughts on what they'd expect when using the International location, please share.

Luis I don't like this idea. Isn't the whole point of International to avoid these national silos?

I think International should simply show the results that are most likely to be relevant to the global audience for the specific term.
In this specific case, globally speaking, football means 'association football,' AKA soccer, so the search should default to that.

If anything, I think the region should default to the location of the search unless the user changes it. For a brand-new US user who has never expressed any preference, it should default to United States for the term 'football' and show them NFL content. If and when they click the region selector and pick International, that same 'football' search should show them 'association football' (aka 'soccer') content.

Luis The problem is that "international" is not international, it's US-centric. There are plenty of posts here about brands and other search results being from the US by default.

JR It should, but Kagi isn't taking into account user location when using International (which I think they should). It means I often have to search twice: the first time I just assume I'll get good results, but most are US based. The second time when I choose UK from the menu.
