When a user reads a translated news story, and shares it, the recipient who follows the link is shown the page in the original language of the story rather than the language the sender used.
For example, if I read the following story in English: https://news.kagi.com/s/tasrbk
and I share it with somebody who is not a Kagi user (and therefore does not have a language preference set), the story opens in the original Czech.
Reproduction steps:
- Open a translated news story.
- Copy the share link.
- Open the link while logged out or in a private/incognito window.
- The page is in the original language rather than the translated language.
The context of sharing a story implies that the sender wants the recipient to see what the sender is seeing.
The unexpected change in language is undesirable behaviour because the sender is likely to communicate with a recipient who has a similar language knowledge profile and also does not speak the original language of the story.
I think the simple solution is to encode the display language at the time of sharing as a URL parameter of the link, and when such a parameter is present, the recipient's display language should match the parameter found in the URL shared with them.
