So our thought when adding this feature was that it depends on the browser / app location settings being enabled, so the privacy aspect would come from the users' own preference settings.
That said we saw the number of edge cases like the one you linked to, so we'll roll it back on the next production deploy and make it opt-in while we work out a better fit for it.
