Old inaccurate results

I wanted to read more about the new iPhone 17 that was just announced. Half of my search results (in mixed order) have been filled with irrelevant 5-15 year old results including web.archive after searching for “iPhone 17” - that’s it.

My guess would be that with very breaking news Kagi stupefies and tries to fill in the gaps if it lacks content but it could simply put more slightly older articles compared to the news (e.g. 1-2 weeks before the iPhone 17 release) instead of outdated gibberish. Maybe this bug is caused by something else entirely.

Hey, I just tried it and the results seem fine imo. Are you still seeing it?

Yes it’s still happening, now that more articles were published it filled some gaps but it didn’t change. Site didn’t let me upload a film so I took screenshots.

For context the first screenshot features top 3 results. The language mixed in is Polish.

What server region are you in (can be found at the bottom of the hamburger menu)?

RoxyRoxyRoxy I use a VPN (but it connects to the same region), if I turn it off it still connects me to EUROPE-WEST2.

InternetChunk Can replicate now. These are definitely a bit degraded results compared to what I was seeing in the US - interesting sites imo but not related to iPhone 17 🙂

RoxyRoxyRoxy Why are searches based on connected server region? Is choosing a region in settings (for I presume more region specific searches) the same thing as me being connected to Europe West2? Or are these not connected in any way? And how does international region impact results?

InternetChunk The server region can change results due to differences in latency between upstreams, and in some cases different providers entirely. The search region is a parameter we pass to the upstreams, not related to the physical location. (And international IIRC we just don't pass that parameter)

RoxyRoxyRoxy I didn’t know if I should have created a separate report but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it discussed somewhere (inaccurate images). I tried searching for a query about a polish cucumber dish (Poland region search results + EUROPE WEST2) and more than half of the images did not concern the subject. One showed avocados but half of all of them showed me America’s got Talent competitions?? And other singers..
