What I've observed is the following:
Searching [city name], [province/county/state] will send you to that location and give you a basic view.
If your map is already in that approximate location, typing [city name] without anything else will give you that view which features matching POIs as @kirkmc is mentioning in this thread.
If you search [city name] whilst being nowhere near the desired location, you get a list of potential matches and Kagi Maps will take you to the top result by default.
And regarding the widget size, I am having a hard time seeing an issue. If I shrink my browser window down into a 1/4 window it still seems ok for me.
