Gemini Pro 2.5 conversational tone is a significant regression from the Preview version

In the preview phase, I found Gemini Pro 2.5 to be a big improvement on Claude Sonnet 3.5 (and later 4). However, it now constantly praises the user with how excellent and smart and special you are, which quickly poisons the context and the conversation turns into obsequious nonsense. I've tried it with one of my custom prompts, with specific instructions to avoid this and it didn't seem to take.

I don't know if this is on Google's end with their tuning, but I really hope maybe you guys switched up your system prompt and could revert it? It's driving me nuts, the preview was a massive step forward for Gemini models.

Expected: a balanced tone in the conversation, without constant praise about how perfect and insightful whatever you just wrote was. This was the case in the Preview phase, and a welcome change from Claude Sonnet which has a similar tendency to praise the user and take the conversation off its rails.

Observed: The output from Gemini Pro 2.5 has changed in the full release version, to constantly mention that "That is an excellent insight, you are perfectly correct on all your points and you cut to the very heart of the issues" and useless drivel along those lines. It rapidly gets out of control and significantly biases the context window. Output quality drastically declines with further turns.

I'll share a thread next time I have a good example of it.

I checked and it's not from our system prompt. It would be weird if it was since we don't want to encourage sycophantic behavior in general from the models (it makes them more likely to agree on things that are false/harmful/useless).

It's probably a backend change on Google's side since we changed from the preview endpoint to the regular endpoint -- they have that endpoint up and likely tune their model recurrently now.

Thanks, that's useful to know. I'll try harder to squash it with custom prompting, the preview really was great for the token cost. Hopefully it'll swing back, I think I read that Claude had a fair amount of user complaints for how cheerful and chatty it was, with Anthropic making some adjustments.

Nashwan not a documented feature and still WIP, but you can try appending /system_prompt_overwrite true to the end of your custom instructions. This overwrites the entire system prompt with your custom instructions. Again, WIP and might face unexpected behaviour, but thought I'd mention as you may find it helpful

I get the same on gemini.google.com, it's definitely not Kagi-related.
And I agree, it's very annoying.

Yikes. There's no way you can trust an LLM output like that, whatever Deepmind did, I really hope they manage to undo whatever tuning got us here!

After reading this thread from about a week ago, I've been keeping an eye on how the assistant behaves. I use Gemini Pro 2.5 every day (through Kagi Assistant) and I must say that only in one thread have I experienced this and that was a mild case: exactly two statements like "your question is astute". I tried to "challenge" it and ask why despite my custom instructions it made such remarks and that put an end to it.

Eventually that did not recur and I must say that I have, in effect, not faced it and the two occurrences are within the threshold of small random errors which I can easily ignore. I have a very short and simple entry in "Custom Instructions" for the assistant in which I ask it to be direct, concise etc. (can paste it if here if there is interest)

I don't know if it's helpful but I just wanted to state my observations in case it is helpful for those looking into it.
