I am unable to access kagi.com from mainland China using IPv4 connections, while IPv6 connections work perfectly. Interestingly, Kagi subdomains work fine with IPv4.
Steps to replicate:
- From mainland China, attempt to access kagi.com
- Connection times out on IPv4 (34.36.67.198)
- Test IPv6 connection - works normally (2600:1901:0:f33:🙂
- Test subdomains: translate.kagi.com (34.160.108.95) and status.kagi.com (76.76.21.61) - both work with IPv4
Technical evidence:
- ping kagi.com (34.36.67.198): 100% packet loss
- ping translate.kagi.com (34.160.108.95): successful, 237ms
- ping status.kagi.com (76.76.21.61): successful, 76ms
This appears to be a routing issue specific to IP 34.36.67.198, not a general block of Kagi services. The issue started occurring approximately half a month ago, while it worked fine before.
This significantly impacts my ability to use Kagi for daily search needs.
I expect to be able to access kagi.com reliably from mainland China using both IPv4 and IPv6 connections, just like the subdomains currently work.
Suggested technical solutions:
- Add alternative IPv4 A records for kagi.com using working IPs (like 34.160.108.95)
- Implement geographic DNS routing to serve accessible IPs for mainland China users
- Use DNS load balancing across multiple IPv4 addresses
This would restore access for existing users and potentially open up the mainland China market for new subscribers.
