I ended up using custom CSS to hide the News and Podcast navigation items. It would haven been nicer, though, to be able to move them to the overflow menu or at least move them to the end (I use Maps more than either of the menu items I'm trying to hide).
I primarily wanted this for mobile as having to horizontally scroll to get to my preferred nav items is a bit tedious.
Moving unused or under-utilized menu items to the overflow menu make the UI cleaner and easier to use on mobile. Add in the ability to change the order of the items and it just makes using those nav items in mobile that much easier.
