Kagi Mail: Suggestions Based on My Personal Email Experience

As many others have already said, I am already quite happy with what Proton provides. I would rather have an email client with integration to my password manager with aliases than an integration with search.
I don't think Proton is perfect, and if Kagi does a good job, I will definitely give it a chance. The suggestions in this post are really good, and I hope Kagi takes these suggestions into consideration.

What I would NOT like to see are half-baked implementations similar to what I've seen on Proton.

I'm confident that the product team @ kagi have considered this and that there are many factors behind the scenes that led to the kagi ecosystem to head in this direction. I myself don't think this is a bad thing - if the right processes are in place to support the expansion (e.g. hiring) - this should have a relatively small impact on kagis' existing product roadmaps and plans (i.e. contiuing support for their existing offerings)

Vlad One thing to understand is that from day one we are building an eco-system, and one does not achieve the mission of making the web more humane with a single product. We want to offer a hollistic replacement for big tech.

Of course, as the consumers of Kagi services, it is our* responsibilty* to hold Kagi accountable should their existing offerings fall behind in support / development, constructive critisism and helpful feedback is what this feeback site was built for

With that being the case, I think it would be best if we could return the content/context of this thread to focus on the ways we would like to see Kagi Mail improve and differ from existing mail offerings to aid in their VISION development for the service.

Without knowing the current plans, planned features, or wishlist for Kagi Mail

From the nit-pickiest to the "well duh" to the craziest ideas I feel would be extremely useful to try and make sure we are going to receive an offering that is a VIABLE alternative to existing services.

Since this seems to be already pretty much planned out, will custom domain be able without extra cost? This is pretty much the only real scenario I'd use Kagi mail but I wouldn't pay for it either(I have pretty nice service I am using atm)

I think it’s a very natural idea to have the browser, the search, and the email exist or coexist. As an aside, the Mac desperately needs a better email client than Apple mail. I think a well designed application combined with an email service could be a huge game changer.
That being said, I would like the company to focus on all of these things as Apple first, Linux second, and Windows third.

I think all of them should be equally prioritized. If anything Linux should be less prioritized due to the small market share, but as someone who daily drives Linux on my laptop, I hope that isn't going to be the case.

Temanor I (selfishly) would like Windows prioritized BUT that order does make sense, Orion is macOS and in dev for Linux. I don’t believe there’s any Windows devs on the team and Kagi has said they want to go native, so just plopping down an Electron app isn’t an option.

RoxyRoxyRoxy Right, but this is not Orion, and even though Kagi likely has a high MacOS userbase, I would be suprised if there were more than the amount of people using Windows.
I think it makes sense to prioritize them more or less the same.
I don't think someone should be left with an inferior experience if it can be avoided.

That being said, did they ever mention they were making a mail client?
I thought it would only be like what Gmail or Proton Mail does.

Ofc, but the fact remains that they already have devs for Linux and macOS; meaning a lower cost and barrier to entry for those platforms than Windows. I agree ideally everyone would get an app at the same time, Kagi is a startup however and needs to allocate its resources wisely.

Proton does have a (kinda meh, just an Electron web wrapper) desktop app so it's not unheard of, I don't belive an app for Kagi Mail has been confirmed tho.

The main reason I use FastMail and have for many years is their mobile app.

I wouldn't consider a FastMail's mobile app basic, since few do it well.

But since Kagi is already invested in making good mobile applications, it's within reach.

Just throwing this in here. I would prefer Kagi to not branch into the email business (I'm perfectly happy with my current email provider that I'm paying for), stay focused, building a great search and taking on the browser challenge with Orion is large enough bite in of itself.

I can see the synergies between a browser and search. You have three browsers (edge, brave, chrome) already that have those synergies.

The synergies between email and search are far less clear.

jonathan-s agreed with this comment I'd prefer kagi to team up with privacy centered email services like protonmail, rather than attacking a rather other large venture.

jonathan-s I'm pretty sure it is already decided and well on it's way by now.
As Vlad already said in a previous message in this thread, they want to make alternatives for big tech, and make their products integrate well with each other. I am all for this. The thing I am most concerned about is weather or not it is able to replace other email alternatives.

Another thing to mention is that Kagi already has a browser. And both Google and Microsoft do email as well.

I have never seen much of a purpose in integrating a calendar into an email provider. I never did it for gmail and I don't do it for Protonmail.

As for "a drive," do you mean a cloud storage plan, like OneDrive or Google Drive?

Overall, though, I wish to echo the sentiment that I don't think it's a fantastic idea for Kagi to be expanding into the email space, at least at this point. If and only if Kagi offered both a functional email client and cloud storage solution would I feel comfortable canceling my Proton account and using Kagi's instead, as those are the two things I use Proton for. Until both are offered, I have no use for just one or the other.

Metaright In my opinion, a calendar should be part of the client software, not the service. We already have iCalendar, and its files can be sent through email so the client software can interpret them.

That being said, I don't think a web client calendar would be a huge time investment.

I'm excited about Kagi Email! I'm really looking forward to breaking free from Microsoft's hold. Please ensure that Kagi Mail can be used with native apps like Apple Mail, rather than implementing a convoluted system that forces users to rely on an app or extension on Mac, as Proton does. This is the main reason I've stuck with Microsoft.

tyano I think the reason for why Proton relies on Proton Bridge is encryption and decryption of emails.
Something standard email clients does not support. Proton has a page explaining it here.

Edit: Specifically zero access encryption.

Just to chime in, I’ll switch from proton once a catch-all alias and domains are implemented. I’m very partial to the catch-all.

I would be very interested in seeing an email service by Kagi. I don't pay for email right now besides email connected to one of my own websites. I've thought about giving FastMail or Proton a try, but the pain was never big enough to do that. If Kagi Mail was part of my existing Duo plan in some form, I would give it a try.

I send and receive emails via Apple Mail. A fancy UI would be wasted on me, because I will never use a separate website or app for just one email account. I want everything in one place.

What I yearn for is a really intelligent AI system pre-sorting my email and learning from my behavior. If that would work across all my email accounts, it would be amazing. To set up rules manually just doesn't cut it. Apple's own new categorizations are too unreliable. The AI needs to be better than me at sorting my email (personal mail, press releases, newsletters, notifications, solicitations …). Maybe it would learn from me sorting it, deleting it, replying to it. That's something I'm hoping for. But it has to work 120% of the time. It has to be more than flawless. Otherwise I will just revert to doing it manually, because I can't risk overlooking an important message.

Other than that, I want it to play nice with Apple Mail, follow standards, be fast, reliable.

I'm not sure how this would integrate with Kagi Search. I don't feel like I have a lot of overlap between things I get via email and things I search for.
