Currently, Firefox only allows users to choose from two poor choices for what they see on new tab:
- a "search" page where Mozilla can put all the advertisement it wants for features its users don't need nor want, like "Pocket"
- a blank page.
I'd rather have a slightly more exciting option: having new tabs open https://kagi.com by default!
(preferably locally cached, to remove the problems of a not super necessary network request)
In new windows however, a user can put a custom URL, which is great.
(but opening new windows cause a seemingly unnecessary network request be made to kagi.com, which could also be cached away)
From https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1092024, the only way to set a custom URL as a new page is through an extension.
Sure, I could install a third party extension to do that, but it might be appropriate to offer this possibility right in the Kagi Firefox extension.
I don't think making this the default would be a good idea, but having the option would be nice.
A similar popup to this would set the Homepage, and another the new tab:

Alternatively (to reduce the number of permission popups at install-time or if the user clicked "no"), the Homepage and New Tab would be configurable there with two new buttons:
