I was looking for news stories regarding the first major software update on the new OnePlus 13. The first news stories on the topic appeared on January 13, 2025.
Tab: News
Search query: "OnePlus 13 update"
Date range: Jan 13 — now (Jan 15)
Sort: oldest first
Sources of relevant news stories returned by Google.ca (with country-specific, low-quality & aggregation sources removed):
Sources of relevant news stories returned by Kagi with region "Canada (CA - en)":
Sources of relevant news stories returned by Kagi with region "International":
Comparing the results between Google and Kagi, you can come to the following conclusions:
- Some of the quality sources (PhoneArena, 9to5Google, Android Authority, Gizmochina) are not fetched by Kagi
- The region filter in Kagi leads to erroneous filtering; "GSMArena.com" only appears with the region set to Canada, "Digital Trends" is the opposite and only appearing with the region set to International, and "Business Standard" should be filtered out when the region is set to Canada as it's an Indian regional source
- The "recency" sorting in Kagi is inconsistent when changing region, even if the same news stories are in the results
These inconsistencies make it difficult to substitute Google News with Kagi News.
The search query used as example is specific but I would expect that you can find similar inconsistencies with other search queries.
