I'm with you in spirit, but this one is rough, technically speaking. Unlike a forum or any public website, you can't freely browse Discord servers and their content, even if they are public/community and open to join.
This makes creating an index of content next to impossible without a dedicated and custom Discord bot that would have to be invited by server owners who want it to index their server's content. It wouldn't surprise me if this is against Discord's TOS as well (even if done with a verified bot).
Additionally, even if the content were to be indexed, in order to fully access the content, an individual would then:
- Need to have, and be logged into, a Discord account
- Join the server (the bot in question would need to also handle this process, and if at any time permissions are changed, access is revoked, etc., the benefit of the index is gone)
- Then click on the link to be taken to the content in question
And this isn't even taking into account the need to filter out massive amounts of non-information. Forums are moderated, organized, and not 'real-time' like a chat platform. Even looking at Discord communities that contain valuable information, I would guess that the ratio of good:bad data is orders of magnitude in difference.
It's unfortunate that so many support groups are moving from forums or other open solutions to walled gardens that make surfacing information nearly impossible. This problem is talked about on the /r/DataHoarder subreddit semi-regularly. https://old.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/125z4kt/the_impact_of_discord_on_data_archiving/#:~:text=Discord%20is,in%20google%2C
I wish it weren't so, but I'm guessing that this will never happen.
