Following up on this. Increasingly, the news results displayed in search have been excessively short, and editing the date range hasn't resulted in more results popping up. See an example below.
Perhaps it is worth offering expanded search options like Google's advanced search capability (its own standard time filtering capability doesn't work too well) as a default.
