I've seen a lot of people on the discord request there be an API for the new translates feature.

I'll be fully honest
honest:a part of me is afraid that it's going to be extremely overused of People start adding it to browser translate futures and have webpages automatically Translate.

That there are many applications where it would be nice to have direct integration such as Raycast style applications

In my case, I am creating a real-time translation application, so I am interested in being able to use translations with good accuracy via API. I will be watching with anticipation, including setting up some sort of billing plan.
However, as you are concerned, I can easily imagine that if the API functionality becomes available, it will be used by many different users.
We can assume that server resources will be limited, so some sort of user usage restrictions will need to be imposed at the same time.

I’m developing an Apple Shortcut that uses Kagi Translate for real-time translations, and having an API available would be incredibly useful for my project.
I understand the concerns about potential overuse and completely agree that implementing usage restrictions or a billing plan could help manage server resources efficiently. This would ensure that the API remains sustainable and accessible for all of us.

I'd like to add my interest in having an API for Kagi Translate, even with a separate billing plan. I'm currently using DeepL to translate small texts (1-10 sentences), around 10-20 per day. Kagi Translate would be an interesting alternative. Concerns about overuse/abuse could be easily addressed with a rate limit.

I find having Yet Another Browser Tab irritating from time to time. Having a dedicated app that integrates this translation API would be very useful. As it so happens, I would be most likely capable of creating such an app for myself, if the translation service had an API.

Having some kind of API usage allowance for personal use included in my monthly Kagi plan would also be nice, though it probably won't happen given the summarization API doesn't have that, and all API usage is billed separately to credits.

vikanezrimaya I don't know if you think the kagi translate website is good enough for you, but know that you can actually add it as an app on most systems.
If you're on kagi translate and chrome, there should be 'install' button in the right of the adress bar and then you'l see

Firefox on desktop doesn't have it anymore. safari should have it.

A Kagi Translate API would be really good to see! My company would certainly take advantage of it as Kagi Translate is super rich with the way translations work.

Initial usage at my company would look like using it as part of an LLM pipeline to give LLMs more powerful tools to translate text to languages they are trained in.

Having all the features of Kagi Translate (e.g., translation settings) incorporated into the API would be very valuable.

I'd definitely want a translate API. I have a Python script that I use to quickly do OCR and translate text from images for me, and currently the translation is just done with Deepseek or ChatGPT. Would be good to add Kagi to that, as the translation results I've seen so far have been very good.
