If you search 398.6mpc = ly
, you'll get a calculation result at the top: = 1.3001E+09 Light year
These types of results are inconsistent, depending on the query. Sometimes a value of this size is represented in scientific notation, sometimes not. For example, if I search 1.3001E+09 Mpc = Mpc
it returns my initial value in one row, but reformats it to decimal notation in a second row. So, kinda weird.
But in the cases where scientific notation is used, I have some suggestions about improving the display to make it more readable and accessible. I assume you can change it, since I don't get any special result when searching Google with this query.
In general, I think this result format could be more user-friendly. First, it would be ideal if we could have a dynamic format for this, since I would prefer it give me a value with digit grouping - I know we do comma thousands separators for English locales, every three places, like = 1,300,000,000 Light year
. I'm sure other locales have different conventions, but I've heard spaces are used instead of commas in international contexts. That would work for me too. It just helps you distinguish the zeroes from each other so you don't mix them up.
it doesn't have to use scientific notation so early. I get that you have to start using scientific notation at some point, but billion is too early for me. I would prefer switching to scientific notation at much larger values like n x 10¹⁵, since these results are already smaller than the main results, plus they can wrap if necessary.
Finally, I would also prefer if it's in regular scientific notation than E notation. Firstly, because E notation requires background knowledge, or it at least requires spending unnecessary time puzzling out the meaning. Regular scientific notation is more self-explanatory, because the math is expressed only in the most common symbols, the multiplication operator and the exponent superscript convention.
Further, E notation is just not very readable or pleasant to look at. My brain strains just looking at it because it looks like the launch sequence for a rocket ship. So I would rather it's rendered like = 1.3001 x 10⁹ Light year
(or 9 if you can't use superscript).
Thank you for considering my feedback! I love the service in any case.
