Option to turn off all AI features

Dustin They're not off by default - I had to go turn off "use quick answer when the query ends in a question mark". And, the button that I will never want to tap on is still there.

Your grocery analogy doesn't make any sense. If I'm going to spend money on a tool, I want it to be very very good at the thing I want, and not try to make me do things I don't want. It's more like: wanting a refrigerator with no IoT features, but every fridge that I shop for has UX that constantly suggests I connect it to wifi.

I would suggest you read back through the thread that my request was merged into.

rtbick I think it's fair to want to totally disable all AI options (especially in the case of something like #6410) but you're being a little disingenuous in portraying how Kagi uses AI. This isn't Microsoft shoving Copilot into your taskbar, there's no popups reminding you about Quick Answer or asking you to use it. Having a button there isn't "trying to make you" use AI, just as having a power off button above my keyboard isn't trying to make me power off my PC in the middle of work.
Also because Quick Answer interactions are billed as a separate search, @Dustin 's analogy makes perfect sense, you're not paying for any AI unless you use it, just as you don't pay for a can of soup unless you put it in your cart and check out.

@Vlad I agree with @[deleted] completely. I'm here to point out that it seems impossible to fully disable "quick answer". I have auto-quick-answer switched off, but I still, without requesting or wanting it and with no ? in my query, get this (poor-quality) quick answer:

So it appears there are other, less-documented quick-answer triggers aside from ?, such as the word "Define". These ought to be disabled when I switch off auto-quick-answer; why are they not?

To be clear: do whatever it is you do to parse my search queries, but I do not ever want an 'AI' interpretation or summary of the search results. How do I get that, please?

Uno-Selecta that’s not an “AI”feature but a normal feature in all search engines for over a decade. It just happens to be wrong.

Incidentally, if you spell blasé correctly, it doesn’t give you a definition as expected. 🤔

I've been a subscriber for a year and love Kagi, but I can't help but complain about its use of AI. I saw the notification about Kagi assistant being available, and a link to the Kagi Fair Use policy. That's where I saw all kinds of rules and protections and commercial use statements. As someone who creates content that is being ripped off by AI, I find it a bit disingenuous to see companies ripping off content, then shutting the door to others trying to use their services in a way they don't like. It's like Cheech and Chong, "Somebody ripped off the thing I ripped off."

The entire assistant feature and AI in Kagi only exists becuase of stolen data. It's the original sin of AI.

I pay for a feature I do not use, and sadly I can’t even disable/hide quick answers, both the button and in suggestions.

Similarly, if one want to use the browser extension, you can’t disable the context menu item called „Kagi Summarize“, but I didn’t want that, I installed the extension to be able to use Kagi in private windows.

A lot of people are fed up with IA in search engine etc. and would like to avoid using or being suggested to use „IA“. The feature to hide „IA”-generated images from the search results is a big feature for those users.

A lot of people want to have the choice to use „IA“ or not and some people just don’t want to use it and are very annoyed if there’s a button constantly nagging them (so to speak, e.g. the Quick Answer button is big compared to the dropdown filter buttons) to use „IA“.

This is my problem as well. I dont mind a sleak AI-integration and Kagi is probably one of the more better search engines here, but the colorful buttons are just annoying. Its nudging people to use more AI in Kagi, which shouldnt be the case or at least should be avoidable by toggling it off.

The feeling of always being just one step away from kicking off some genAI stuff is just not nice. Using AI is just too enticing, and it still results in slop or plain wrong information. A search engine should treat this with caution. Maybe dont even answer the question fully, but show users the five pages most likely to answer them. Then they would be motivated to check facts and sources and not just blindly believe, what the AI stated.

I have mentioned in the other thread my dislike of the new quick answer button in the mobile experience, but to me this further highlights how those who dislike AI features would benefit from an option to hide all of these features entirely. The current settings are not close to enough

I'd love the ability to disable ALL LLM features throughout Kagi with a simple toggle. Preferably this would remove any reference to LLMs.

Ideally Settings->General->Disable all LLM features as a toggle.

The quick answer you're referring to is being rolled back. Intention wasn't to make people use ai more, just to make people who use ai, make it easier.
But mainly just making it easier to switch between results and quick answer but turns out the button isn't very intuitive anyway so it's being taken out

Making something easier is also motivating and enabling more use, is it not? It might not have been intentional, but this is what UX changes do. They motivate behaviour.

Thanks for reacting so swiftly! Looking forward to the rollback – and more options to control LLM integrations. This is necessary for me as a customer.
