Community driven tagging and metadata

I had the idea while looking for some tutorials on python.
Some of the results were from medium, and as you know, some medium pages are accessible to everyone, others only to members.

So I thought, why not allow users to share the information by tagging with something like "MembersOnly". and allow other users to choose if they want to just display the tag, or raise/lower/pin/block priority of said tagged content.

But why stop with that, allow for people to suggest tags, and when enough votes for a tag, just add it to the tag list. And same thing, allow to globally raise/lower/pin/block tagged content.

extending lenses with tagging would allow for updated lens results driven by the community (instead of a static list of sites)
I'm pretty sure tagging would allow for better personalization of restults.

Let's add the "metadata" of "fake news" to Posts I Don't Like.
Let's add the GPS, etc of people I don't like to dox them. Sure there would be no liability there to Kagi either.

The Gab browser also offered the option of community notes. I've never heard anything good come from it.

why not also add community driven metadata ? like addresses, phone numbers and all kinds of stuff to restaurant and places gps coordinates, and what not.

I should probably have suggested using consensus labelling algorithm to avoid this kind of comment from the non-technical people.

Just read about it. You could also have a look at what sponsorblock does to achieve similar behaviour, it works with crowd sourced data just like what I'm suggesting.

Metadata and Tags would require consensus to be added to the set of possible tags and metadata.
Metadata can be attached to tags.

An example:
In order for a search result to have an "address" metadata, it would require to have the "Place" Tag.
In order to have the "Place" Tag, it would require for enough people to up-vote the tag. (can down-voted as well)

once consensus is reached for the "Place" tag. Voting can happen the same way for the attached "Address" metadata.

I don't know about the Gab browser, all I know is that that Gab thing have been developed in a hurry with focus over freedom of expression, not privacy.

Quite the opposite in fact !
As of today, adding a blog to the "Small web" requires creating a PR at https://github.com/kagisearch/smallweb
and waiting for Kagi staff review.
With the tagging and voting mechanism this would not be required anymore.

Not really, it is not about voting for search result position, but voting for tags to be applied on the results.
Up to the user to do whatever they see fit with those tags: promote them, lower them, display them, pin or block them...
Or create a lens to only search on content with a set of tags.

Now obviously, if you are the only person tagging google.com as the "small web", for sure google.com won't get the tag. Is this a popularity thing ? I'm not sure.

Or if you really enjoy the Kagi Staff selection of small web, we could keep the "Small Web" as it is, and have a "Community Small Web" Tag driven by the community.
And still, search results not affected at all by tags. One could also opt-in or opt-out of displaying the tags and metadata.

to the Kagi staff, in fact some way to implement this could also be at browser level with external databases maintained by the community (at least for the end result tagging) with very little to no overhead for the kagi servers.

the Idea would be to have a browser extension adding custom css selectors/decorators (sorry, I'm not a web dev person) to each Kagi result.
The only thing Kagi would have to do is apply user defined rules (from the settings menu) on the results directly from the user browser thanks to kagi's js code (if not using the html only version).

Rules could be, as simple as lower/raise/pin/block.

or maybe templates:

json is probably a very bad idea, but this is just some basic example.

In fact I think tagging/metadata databases would be the ultimate solution for personalization.

people would choose what database to use to enrich their results. And how the page result would act on these tags.
Everyone free to have the behaviour they like without affecting the results of others.
The quality of the personalization being obviously proportionate to the quality of the chosen databases.
And it would be a solution for lots of debate in the kagifeedback threads 😅 because obviously, people are not living on the same planet over here !
