Even when you set your language to German in settings and set DE as locale, the Summarizer still outputs English as default. For non English speakers this is an issue. The current workaround is to click "Discuss Further" and then ask it to provide the summary in German.

mullinggroove Oh roger, so the default language for summarizer should be one user specified as their default language in Kagi settings. Good idea!

Vlad That would be great, indeed! A setting to default to en, es, de, fr, etc.
But to make it suit all user requirements, you should probably also add the choice to let the summary language default to the document language.

To me the "document language" option sounds like a sensible default option. Cause there are multiple use cases to me, e.g.

Reading a verbosive news article: Summarize to my native langugage
Reading an article about computer science: Summarize to english (cause it's the domain language of that topic)

If I had such an option, I would pick "Document language" as the default option.

Interface Language

To provide a consistent experience for non English speaking users, setting the interface language should also set the default Quick Answer, Summarizer and Assistant output language to the desired locale. The default option should be 'Auto' where Kagi guesses what the output language should be.

Research Assistant

For multi lingual users, it makes sense to be able to change the output language of the research assistant directly in the interface. Thereby some content can be researched in one's mother tongue, while other topics can be processed in one's 2nd or 3rd languages without leaving the assistant interface.

A similar quick setting could be applied to Quick Answer to allow for more flexibility while searching the web.

Language consistency in Assistant's responses:
- 1.1 Consistent language output: Assistant should always respond in the language of the input, regardless of the language of the resources used
- 1.2 Adherence to user language settings: Assistant should respond in a language specified in user settings, which may differ from the prompt's language
Resource fetching irrespective of prompt lamnguage: Assistant should prioritise delivering the most relevant search results based on the user's query, even if the source material is in a different language

For 1., this is what we have planned,

1.1 Consistent language output:
This is the default behaviour of Assistant. If you have examples where this isn't working please let us know.
For document summaries, that currently default to English without considering user or document language, we could consider implementing a user control option as shown by mullinggroove.
1.2 Adherence to user language settings: In the upcoming Assistant this can be addressed with custom instructions
- You'll be able to define general custom instructions for Assistant
- Users will have the possibility to set up multiple Custom Assistants
  (e.g. custom instruction: "use XXX language only; use XXX alphabet whenever possible; do not use English except in programming languages if any; translate any other language to XXX language whenever possible)

What are your thoughts on using custom instructions as language settings in Assistant?

2. Assistant fetching the most relevant resources independent from the language used in the prompt:
We see this as a search use case, and it should already work as described. If you see any issues or underperformance please let us know.

2 Yes, It's not only about language. I think it would be great if the user can be able to choose the region like in search for resources. Like choose only Spanish resources or any by default

1.2 Anyway if you provide some dropdown to choose language and from where fetch resources it will be more usable instead of writing custom instructions somewhere. And for custom assistant you can disable this fields, so user need to set up language preferences only for Custom Mode

Most users won't have any experience in constructing preprompts. So it would be nice to have some presets for those users so they can just select a language from a drop down menu. (in the backend this would create a custom preprompt specifying the output language)

I think not just the language, but also the ability to choose the region to fetch region-specific results. I thought that was brought up here, but now I'm not sure, so it might be a separate feature request.

I understand your point, but the issue we resolved didn't affect search results. Specifically, it doesn't influence whether the sources used match the language of the input prompt.

When I type a link in Research mode, the assistant returns English regardless of the document language.

e.g.

It would be useful if the assistant had a language selection feature similar to Universal Summarizer.

@Luis while the custom prompt is powerful, it seems that most multilingual users will expect an easy toggle for Ai in languages. Interenstingly i haven't seen that in any of the chatbots so Kagi could pave the way here. This setting would then be replicated in AI settings as well. The options in this dropdown as I would imagie would be

Document/prompt language
Specific language (avaialble from out list of interface languages)

I would like to set the default language and summary type in the search result summary and Universal Summarizer.

Currently, I need to manually change the settings every time I use the Universal Summarizer, and the search result summary can't even change the language, which is not so convenient.

Add settings for the default Summary Type and Output Language, so that we don't need to manually change it everytime.
