Default search engine setting fails on MacOS 12.7.1 and Safari 17.1

I have the Kagi extension on various iOS and MacOS devices making it the default search engine. It works well on all devices, except on an older MacBook Pro running MacOS 12.7.1 and Safari 17.1. I have it installed and after activating the 'default search engine' setting it forwards all my search queries to Kagi (with DuckDuckGo set as default engine in Safari). However, after a while (don't have a clear understanding what triggers it) Safari reverts to giving me DuckDuckGo results instead of forwarding to Kagi.

After disabling the Kagi extension and then enabling it again it works again. Until it no longer does after a while and the whole process repeats itself.

Always forward search queries to Kagi on older Mac & Safari versions.

I'm noticing similar behavior on my iPhone 13 running iOS 17.5.1. I have Safari configured to use Bing as the default search and the Kagi extension/app also set to using Bing. The behavior I'm seeing is that when I type search terms into Safari search bar and go, the search will be sent to Bing and I get a Bing page loaded. If I tap in the address bar the page will refresh and I will be sent to Kagi with the same search terms. This is unfortunate, as from a privacy perspective my search terms are making it to whatever search engine I have configured to make Kagi default search work.

It did not used to do this, however I don't recall when I first started noticing this and I don't know if it was an update to iOS/Safari or the Kagi extension in which this first started happening. For me it happens 100% of the time.

drachen We updated the Safari extension recently, have you tried with the new version?

Vlad I updated to the new extension on the App Store and the behavior is the same, though it doesn’t happen 100% it does consistently happen. Is there anything I can provide to help fix this?
