Extension not logging in to search in ubuntu firefox private window

Steps to reproduce:
Run firefox on ubuntu
Login to Kagi extension
Enable extension to run in private window
Set Kagi as default search
Open a private window
Verify that the kagi extension is active and logged in in the private window
Attempt to make a search

Expected behavior:

Same issue, Firefox on MacOS. Clicking the "save" button after entering the API key throws an error:

Thanks for reporting this @Quagoost and @kagi-user. Can you confirm if this is the same issue as reported in https://github.com/kagisearch/browser_extensions/issues/27#issuecomment-1735185298 ? Basically, do you have the option to delete browser history on quit?

I wasn't able to reproduce this error when I just tried it again on a fresh instance of Firefox + Kagi extension.

Previously, the save button in the extension threw the above error, but now it does not.

I did not have the option to delete browser history on quit enabled when I got this error last weeek.

@brn I am experiencing this issue on extension version 0.4.1 in firefox on both Windows and fedora 38. When inspecting the failure in the addon debugger I have the same stacktrace when trying to save my session token as kagi-user pasted above. I do not have my browser history set to clear on exit and have tried logging out/back in (getting a new token).

brotis Thanks, have you tried manually setting a token? Is your Firefox profile "hardened" somehow?

brn I tried setting a token manually in the extension, which does not work (it gets the console error on saveToken() that @kagi-user reported). It does seem like the token actually ends up in the Extension Storage when I debug the add-on using firefox inspect, though. I also tried manually setting it in the firefox developer tools but I still appeared logged out in Incognito mode.

I have tried this extension on three platforms and only MacOS seems to be working. Windows and Fedora both seem to be failing. I don't know if it is actually a platform-specific issue, but my profile settings do seem to be pretty similar across them.

Thanks @brotis. I also can't reproduce this and can't find any relevant reports about this problem on other extensions. I could only find https://discourse.mozilla.org/t/error-an-unexpected-error-occurred-when-calling-browser-storage-local-set/113159 but the problem got sorted after an upgrade, and I still suspect it's some profile/privacy setting since that's what would make it reproducible in the earlier issue I linked.

The error from Firefox is quite worthless and cryptic, so I'm not sure what to do here, unless we can find a way to reliably reproduce it on other systems in order to try and debug further.

I created almost the same bug report here (https://kagifeedback.org/d/2436-cannot-save-token-in-the-firefox-extension), and @brn asked me to reply here. As reported in my bug report, I am using Firefox on Windows 10.

I did manage to sort it today, though. I had originally set the Kagi extension to be available in Private Windows. I turned that off (Don't Allow), set the API token in the extension and then set Private Windows for the Kagi extension back to Allow.

I haven't needed to repeat this workaround. The problem has stayed away after browser close and system restart (though in total it has only been a few hours). By the way, I have "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" turned on in my Firefox settings.

Steps to reproduce:

Actual behavior:
The save button says "Saving" forever and the token is not saved, so search asks me to login to Kagi.

Same as https://kagifeedback.org/d/1844-cannot-save-token-in-the-extension, which has already been closed without fix.

Version number of Kagi extension for Firefox is 0.4.1. Operating system is Windows 10 Pro 22H2.

See attached image from the Firefox Developer Tool at the moment of pressing Save.

Expected behavior:
The session token should be saved, making it usable.

I'm guessing when that error happens, the extension is in some bad state, so maybe disallowing/allowing resets that, because the extension code itself doesn't do anything different if it's allowed or not in incognito.

@brn That worked! I can confirm that disallowing from incognito mode allows me to set the token, and then when I enable the extension to run in incognito mode, the extension works as expected (sets up my Kagi session in private window).

I will document this behavior and then close this, unless someone else comes up with a reliable way to reproduce this and we can fix it.

I encountered the same problem as the thread title except running OpenSUSE Tumbleweed with a heavily modified profile. This solution works for me as well.
