Steps to reproduce:
Select a different variant in research/chat (other modes currently don't have variants)
It will change the mode as specified.
Reload the page, (CMD+R,CTRL+R,F5,...).
It will jump back to the mode that was selected before you changed it in the dropdown.
Expected behavior:
On clicking a link in the dropdown, set the &sub_mode parameter accordingly.
