No NSFW results for NSFW image search (safe search turned off)

chuchelo Completely understadable, and the reason we came to this position is that if we do not do anything about it we get in a position where nsfw is displayed for mundane things, see here.

which I am sure is worse than it not being displayed for valid queries.

And it is not trivial for us to solve this so we instead have tightened the filtering until we figure out a good solution.

Vlad thanks, appreciate your response and that you're looking for a solution instead of dismissing this.

If I could vote, I would +1 the suggestion on having a separate switch "include potentially sensitive results" or something which is only available if safe search is turned off.

That is exactly the behaviour I would expect, search name of porn star with safe search off, get porn results, even if the term also has another meaning. Perhaps that's just because I've been trained to expect that from other search engines.

I'm sympathetic to prioritisting being a family friendly search engine, especially as I understand that was a founding principal but then in that paradigm I'm struggling to understand what is the current purpose of the image safe search off mode?

I am unhappy about the wording, as it is somewhat tautological ("safe search" and "potentially sensitive results"). But yeah, as usual, not an UI/UX designer. Let me know, what you think 🙂

KagiForMe I also find it a bit silly to have two "unsafe" switches, but given we can't have nsfw results with only one this option LGTM

Personally, I feel that If I go to settings and explicitly turn off image safe search it means that I am opting-out of being family friendly. But if there needs to be multiple settings, perhaps just giving multiple options for the existing settings instead of two different settings would work better?

Safe search behaviour is still quite odd with Kagi.

As the below search for the artwork 'Hiropon' demonstrates, Kagi is being exceptionally safe to the point of being useless for this specific term. Weirdly enough a search for the similar work 'My Lonesome Cowboy' provides the results expected.

I would expect Kagi to perform better in this regard than Google (after disabling safe search with the toggles) because it's usually advertiser squeamishness that forces this kind of thing?

In trying to replace Google (completely) I've found Kagi is great, but woefully lacking in the NSFW functionality - which face it, is a part of life. I'm not sure why I can turn safe search off if it doesn't really seem to do anything. If I still need to use Google for something, then there's no point in me paying to avoid it.

I've encountered this issue while trying to look up nude art models for anatomy references in my art, and I've got to agree it's extremely inconvenient. I was quite surprised by the forced censorship due to the nature of Kagi, and it's very disappointing to see. I don't quite understand what the safe search settings even do since disabling them still censors my results. I believe there is a fine line between "family friendly" and treating the entire userbase as a child in said family. At the end of the day it is up to parents to moderate what their children do online, a safe search gives them the tools to aid in this, but it should not affect everyone else in order to serve a minority.

This is simply bad. What is the point of a paid search engine, if it can't handle adult matters? I have a Kagi subscription so that I don't have to deal with advertiser-friendly ("family") standards with my searches, while maintaining my privacy. If I turn off safe search, it is an explicit acceptance that I want to indulge in things that prudes cannot handle.

This is ridiculous behavior. The “give people what they want” aspect has already been addressed by others so I’ll address the “we’re trying to be a family friendly search engine” aspect: if you think you’re going to make more money being “family friendly” vs from serving NSFW results you’re mad. Parents are probably the top consumers of NSFW content.

This behavior has to go, otherwise it’s back to DDG for me.

I'm finding a continued blurring of NSFW material with safe search turned off in images, until clicking on the specific, at which point it displays. This seems to be something that google has also implemented to some degree, and I'm wondering if its a carry over from how Kagi collects imagery?

Vlad Thank you! Searches such as “boobs” and “cumshot” are currently behaving as desired, displaying unblurred images with safe search off. I’ll return to report if anything changes.
