Add text input to Summarizer

I assume the summarizer works for paywalled content if the user is logged in to FT and uses the Kagi extension in their browser?

buteo It does not, crawler has no access to user cookies from the browser.

Currently the universal summarizer can only summarize articles without paywalls. It would be really helpful if it can summarize articles behind them by using cookies with browser extensions. It especially helps to journal articles which are usually a PDF file behind paywall which won't allow us to directly sum them with current extension.

Any thoughts on using a browser extension to be able to summarize paywalled articles for sites where I'm logged in? This would be an incredibly helpful feature since a lot of what I'd like summarized are things like news articles for sites like FT, NYT, WSJ, etc.

I guess the eventual workaround would be to download a copy of the article and upload it manually once uploading to the Summarizer is available.

The Kagi extension could’ve extracted the full text from the fully rendered DOM and sent it to its backend instead of only a URL. That’s technically possible and exactly how read-it-later services such as Instapaper and Readwise Reader have been able to save paywalled content if the user has access.

This does not sound complicated but in order for this to work we would need to add a text area input for the universal summarizer, which is possible. Then we would have to change the extension to allow for this. Not impossible just requires coordination between several teams all of which are overwhelemd with work, for not so much perceived benefit at this time. I wish we had more resources.

Problem: If I want to discuss text from e.g. a paywalled article, I currently copy and paste the text into !chat and run queries there. I wonder if it would be more cheaper to be able to copy and paste that text into either the Universal Summarizer or the Discuss Doc landing page to ask questions about the document there? I know an upload document feature is upcoming, but just copying and pasting plaintext seems like a simple, intermediate solution.

Suggested Solution: Give users to the option of either inputing a URL or inputing text into the Universal Summarizer and Document Discussion similar to the way a body of text can be pasted in to ChatGPT.

CrunchyFritos Hm, Asistanta already allows this and you seem tobe using it. Not sure what exactly are you suggesting in the context of Assistant. Discuss doc landing page behaves in the same way as Assistant, no?

What I am envisioning is a text box where I can paste the text of a document into in order to get a summary.

The Research Assistant currently only allows me to upload a document or ask a query and the Discuss landing page only takes a URL as input. So if I want to get the summary of an article that isn't accessible via a URL, I need to save that text as a file and then upload the file. I'm thinking it would be simpler to just be able to paste the text of an article etc. into Research Assistant or Discuss for a summary/discussion.

In Research Assistant, this could be an option when you click the "Upload" button.

In Discuss, this could be an option where if a URL isn't input, then whatever is input in the text box is treated like the text you want to discuss (similar to how the search bar is used to input text in !chat)

CrunchyFritos You can alredy paste text in Assistant (say for exampe chat mode) and ask it to summarize. How big of a text do you imagine pasting? Trying to understand what is the minimal ask.
