Google displays complementary images on the left of news results and this could also be very useful in lenses (e.g. preview image of receipts). The images are extracted (I think) from the <meta property="og:image" ....
Edit: Seems that "News 360" lens already does it. Allowing it in more lens (or letting the user control it) and adding to News search section is still up, though.
