Chrome extension does not work for Brave Private Windows

Steps to reproduce:

Install Brave Browser
Install Kagi extension from Chrome extension store
Set extension as permitted in private windows
Save Session key in kagi extension
Open new private window
Search via url bar, or go to kagi.com
-> Kagi asks user to log in

Expected behavior:
Search works / kagi.com presents as logged in automatically

Debug info:
Brave v1.52.130 (Jul 7, 2023) / MacOS

Yes, index other search engines is enabled:

Note that the search in a private window is being attempted with Kagi correctly (ie typing test into the url bar goes to kagi.com/search?q=test, but it then immediately redirects to kagi.com/signin - it seems to fail to pass the token set in the extension.

Hi @oselz thanks for reporting this! This seems to be a limitation in Chromium-based browsers.

The Kagi Search extension doesn't set the default search engine in Chromium browsers (see this issue), so this is a setting you need to change in brave://settings/search (the token is probably outdated there, in the URL -- should be https://kagi.com/search?token=TOKEN&q=%s with the token piece you can see in your settings). When you reactivate the extension you're just having it update the token that then sends to kagi.com but the initial setting in your Brave browser's search settings is what it gets started with and what should be updated.

FYI this issue is still ongoing. Would be great if it could be fixed.

Interestingly, I could get it to work by disabling the extension and manually setting the kagi seach url with the session token, but then I was losing the convenience of clicking the extension button to summarize etc. So ironically, if there was a toggle in the extension that would allow to disable overriding the search engine, then I guess that would work… But as it is now, enabling the extension automatically takes over search engine selection.

kagifdbk Thanks for reporting this. I've just installed Brave fresh and Kagi 0.5.1 works on Private windows without problems (default search isn't automatically set, but that doesn't depend on the extension).

Is it possible you have some other setting or extension that is clearing the session information in private windows?
