Hello,
When I was a kid I had 2 ways to decide if I should buy a dictionary to learn a foreign language. I should be able to find the words "quantum" and "motherfucker" because these words are extremes which are typically ignored in dictionaries which are not worth buying. And when reading books, dictionaries which didn't have extremes typically didn't include "difficult" words I didn't understand.
Transposing that to search engines, instead of "quantum" and "motherfucker", I use "Alex Jones" because it tends to be a good way to see the breadth of search results.
After blocking the URLs of all major corporations producing news, I was expecting more articles from individuals but I could not find any.
I don't read news anyway so in itself the result does not really matter to me, but I think including a wider array of results could be a good idea. I saw in the FAQ it was on purpose for quality over quantity and it definitely makes sense. I think in the case of "Alex Jones" for example, not only what major corporations write matters but also what small individuals think also matters. Also the original point of Internet I think was to be connected to individuals and have access to them, not to big corporations.
For example in the past I discovered a small blog about Xbox hardware which had also problems for discovery (e.g.: according to him Google images and Bing were biased in a way his content didn't show up although highly relevant).
I understand search results are constantly biased to favor this or that. But in the case of this test with "Alex Jones", how about including minor blogs or websites? I would be more interested in reading articles written by small individuals rather than written by individuals with opinions formatted by big corporations.
I chose "Alex Jones" because it is an easy one but my point is valid, I believe, for anything else (e.g.: for RPGs I would like to get also results about indie games and not only let's say the latest and greatest Final Fantasy XXXIII). What do you think? Having results more diversified would be a useful feature or not? Or did I miss a parameter for customization?
