How about an option in the settings to enable/disable this? I also think it's quite wasteful, I use the calculator quite often and always have random search results below the instant answer. It's just one click if you want to have the full search results and if people really always want the results visible, they could enable it.
In the transition phase you could also show a "where are my search results" hint with a description that you can enable them in the settings. Obviously it would make sense to have the option disabled by default to save costs.
