A courtesy button to say "Thanks, Good Answer" to the Assistant

I want this for the feels. It's normal in human interactions to say something like, "Thanks, that's a good answer," when someone helps you out. I bugs me to just walk away/close the window after asking the AI something (particularly if there was some back and forth discussion). It feels like I'm snubbing someone.

However, I don't want to literally query the AI with a thank you message and waste resources in some data center somewhere.

Provide a simple button, maybe something as simple as, "Thanks!" or a thumbs up. The user clicks it and feels like they've done the necessary, courteous, thing. The app may, or may not, respond with a canned, "you're welcome."

I feel mixed on this because on the one hand we shouldn't allow human interactions to be coarsened by bad habits developed during use of LLMs, and on the other hand we shouldn't get into the bad habit of anthropomorphizing LLMs.

(I don't actually use LLMs myself, so this doesn't affect me directly.)

petiole I agree. I actually cut out an aside about that in my original suggestion. I think there's an argument for not wanting folks to think of AIs as people, and you might choose to make the button a thumbs up, "Good Answer" or whatnot because of that concern.

However, LLMs are fundamentally designed to come across not only as people, but likable, confident, competent people. It's a major value proposition for many of the use cases. I think we'd have to rework the entire thing to bring that boat back to dock..

This is a good idea. Encouraging courtesy, even towards AI and software is always a good thing. It could also add to the satisfaction of the people who work on the project to know that users actually like and enjoy their work sometimes.
