This suggestion is related to the request for regional pricing. The main obstacle seems to be who would fund the subsidized prices, since Kagi would operate at a loss for any regional pricing that is lower than the standard prices.
I think a few generous Kagi members would be willing to support other members who need help. They just need to be given a chance, a simple method of donating, and maybe a small token incentive.
- Gift Kagi exists, but:
- is not discoverable (did you know Gift Kagi existed?)
- requires knowing who to gift to
- cannot gift to large numbers of people at the same time (how do you gift to 100+, 1000+ people?)
- no "token" incentives for the gifter (t-shirts, socks, coins, tax deductions, etc.)
- There are precedents for a small group of generous users funding a larger number of other people
Thus I propose making it easier for members to choose how much they give towards the Kagi cause:
- Pay-what-you-want pricing like Humble Bundle: more discoverable
- Offer token perks for donations (donor leaderboard, stickers, coins, t-shirts, etc)
- Make it simple for large orgs to invoice sponsorships/donations
- Make it possible to make tax-deductible donations (I understand this may require creating a sister non-profit business, or something)
The excess funds from these optional contributions could be pooled into a fund that subsidizes regional pricing, or even pays for a limited Kagi free tier (completely removing all payment barriers).
