Highway numbers are preferred over regular street names in situations where the highway numbers are never used. In these cases, residents often do not know the highway numbers. The highway numbers are not posted at most intersections, so they would not be useful for navigation.

- Massachusetts Ave and Commonwealth Ave are still labeled 2 and 2A
- Other major streets like Boylston and Newbury remain unlabeled.
- Fairfield and Hereford streets are unlabeled.
